Spann attended North Central High School in Indianapolis, where he was a first team all-state selection his senior season. He holds the school single-season and career rushing yardage and touchdown record. As a college player, Spann established a new single-season touchdown record for Northern Illinois. Spann received the Vern Smith Leadership Award given by the Mid-American Conference and had a storied career for the Huskies:

- Led nation in rushing TDs (2010)
- Second on NIU’s all-time list for career rushing touchdowns

After College, Spann went on to play in the NFL for four years with the Colts, Steelers, Jets, Buccaneers and Texans. He finished his career in the CFL with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. After his playing career ended, Spann went on to coach at the high school level at Midwest Powerhouse, Warren Central High School. Additionally, he oversees the premier Midwest 7v7 program, Indy Select and is currently the Team Director for the FBU National Championship Team in Indiana.
