Anthony Newman

Biography

Position: Defensive Backs

Anthony Newman is widely regarded as the greatest high school football player in Oregon history. Coach Newman was an accomplished baseball player, drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays his senior year in high school. He started at the University of Oregon, playing a leading role transforming the Ducks from perennial Pac-10 doormats to a title contender, and laying the foundation for the powerhouse program that now exists in Eugene.

After being drafted in the second round of the NFL draft, 35th pick overall, he went on to play 12 stellar seasons as an NFL defensive back with the Los Angeles Rams, New Orleans Saints, and Oakland Raiders. Anthony coached at Central Catholic High School in Portland, OR as the defensive coordinator from 2009 - 2019. They won 3 state championships during his time there.  He’s now at West Linn High school in Portland, OR as the defensive coordinator. With a shortened season in 2021, West Linn went 7 – 0 with the defense giving up only 7 points per game.  Anthony is also the color analyst for 1080 The Fan radio station in Portland, OR for the Oregon Ducks.
