Mervyn Fernandez

Biography

Mervyn "Swervin' Mervyn" Fernandez is a former professional American and Canadian football player.

Fernandez  was a standout wide receiver for Andrew Hill High School in San Jose California. After High School, Fernandez, started his football career at a DeAnza Junior College. He completed his football eligibility as a wide receiver at San Jose State University, where he was noticed by Oakland Raiders staff member.

He was the Raiders 10th round pick in the 1983 NFL Draft.

Fernandez had a six year career in the Canadian Football League form 1982-1986 with the BC Lions. Finishing his rookie season with over 1,000 receiving yards, he won the CFL Western Division Most Outstanding Rookie award. Ending his career in the CFL as a two-time CLF All-Star (1984-1985) and being named to the BC Lions Wall of Fame, he brought his talents back to the U.S..

During his time with the Los Angeles Raiders (1987-1992), Fernandez played in 86 games with 209 catches for 3,764 yards and 19 touchdowns. in 1988, Fernandez led NFL receivers in average yards per catch (26).
